15 Oct 2007 - Osmington Bay News
Friday 12th October
The staff and children are really looking forward to their week away at Osmington. Today the children find out about chalets, activity groups and which coach they are to travel on. The weather forecast suggests a mixed week ,so plenty of waterproofs and changes of clothes are needed!!
Pupils should be brought into the school hall at 8.30 and parents should then take luggage out to the allocated coach, where they can then wave goodbye.
Monday 15th October
The coaches left just after 9 o'clock, earlier than expected. The staff and children were in good spirits and very excited about the week ahead. More news will be posted here later today.
The coaches have arrived safely and all of the children are currently employed making beds and unpacking. The sun is shining over Osmington Bay this evening and after dinner, the children will have the chance to explore the site and meet the Group Leaders from the centre.
Although the journey time wasn't too bad, the children enjoyed a break from travelling when they visited the Discovery Centre and Portland Castle this afternoon. More news tomorrow.
Tuesday 16th October
Everyone was tucked up in bed by 10.30 last night, including staff!!
The weather is wild and windy this morning but the children ate a huge cooked breakfast and left the centre wrapped up warm and dressed for the weather. The kitchen at Osmington has improved and extended the menu to include a wider range of healthy options.
All fingers are crossed that the clouds will clear in time for the locality walk this afternoon although the rain has stopped. The local weather forecast suggests that tomorrow will be finer and the weather will continue to improve as the week goes on.
Today's activities include orienteering, problem solving and some high rope action.
More information tomorrow.
Bonus News!
Tuesday evening.
The weather was sunny and warm this afternoon, if a little windy. The village walk was excellent with the children learning more about the geography of the local area. After a very long walk, everyone had 'roses' in their cheeks and a huge appetite!!
Tonight's menu consisted of butterbean bake, steak and potato pie or chicken casserole, followed by rice pudding. The evening activities consist of a visit to the Gift Shop and a game of 'Starburst', an outdoor challenge based activity.
More news tomorrow.
Wednesday 17th October
Last night's game of 'Starburst' was great fun. Although it rained again during the night, it is brighter this morning with clear skies.
The activity groups will spend the first part of the day together on the beach, hunting for fossils. There is also a walk planned during which they will look at features of the coastline.
Everyone is well and in good spirits.
The Year 6 pupils that remained at St Paul's have been commended for their behaviour by Mrs Lawday, our Lunchtime Supervisor. They have been a brilliant help to her team over the last two days, acting as monitors in the dining hall and helping to take care of the younger children.
Thursday 18th October
Yesterday's beach walk was a huge success and the children had a fantastic time digging for fossils in the clay. They found some good examples of amonites and devil's claws. Message from Miss Couzens - washing machines should be on standby as the children looked like Mud Men by the time they had finished.
Yesterday afternoon saw groups aeroballing (a mixture of netball and trampolining), out on the archery range and completing the Sensory Trail.
Today's activities include abseiling, climbing and rock pooling. The weather is crisp and sunny with great visibility. Chalet inspection was at 8.45 and I have it on good authority that as I type this, the chalets are a 'hive of activity' with bags being packed, carpets swept and outfits being aired for tonight's disco.
More news tomorrow.
Friday 19th October
The disco was very successful with Year 6 'struting their funky stuff' all night long!
After a hearty breakfast, the children packed their bags and cleared out the chalets ready for the journey home. The washing machines of Wokingham will be in overdrive this weekend as our party are bringing a considerable amount of Osmington clay and mud back with them!
The weather is chilly but sunny and this morning's activities include, orienteering, climbing and high ropes. Although tired, the children are in great spirits and making the most of the last few hours at the centre. There was a concensus of opinion at breakfast that everyone is looking forward to sleeping in their own bed's tonight!
The children have been a real credit to the school and excellent ambbassadors for St Paul's. We have missed them a lot and we are looking forward to seeing them back here, safe and sound.
The coaches are due to pick up at 2.00 and we are expecting them back at school between 5.00 and 5.30pm. We will of course update the website after 3.30 if there are any unexpected changes to the arrival time.
